What
Can I Do to Prevent Substance Abuse?
There are constant pressures on youth to drink.
Parents and guardians are key to preventing underage drinking and
drug use.
In addition, research shows that brain development
continues into our early twenties. Damage from alcohol and drugs
can be long-term and irreversible. Young users are most susceptible
to damaging two key brain areas: the prefrontal lobe and the hippocampus.
Here are two simple things you can do to prevent
your child from drinking:
Start Talking Before They Start Drinking
Be the first to talk with your pre-teen about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
Active Cambridge Kids = Drug Free Kids
Get them involved in after-school activities.
